Standard:

CH1.d. Students know how to use the periodic table to determine the number of electrons                        available for bonding.

CH2. a. Students know atoms combine to form molecules by sharing electrons to form covalent bonds

CH2.b. Students know chemical bonds between atoms in molecules such as H2, CH4, NH3, CCH2, N2, CL 2 and many large biological molecules are covalent. 

CH2.e. Students know how to draw Lewis dot structures. 

Objective:  SWBA to build covalent bonds and predict the shapes of molecules by applying Lewis Dot structures and the VSEPR theory with 80% or more accuracy.

Activities: 1. Warm-up

2. DII strategy: Covalent bonding and Molecular shapes

3. Kinesthetic activity- Build three-dimensional models of the molecular shapes

4. KAGAN Strategy- Numbered Heads together

                  metallic bonds or by exchanging electrons to form ionic bonds.

 

Objective: SWBA to demonstrate single, double, and triple covalent bonds by DII, KAGAN and Guided practice strategies.   

 

Activities: 1. Warm-up

                  2. DII review of the Covalent Bonding

                 3. Guided Practice- Students construct covalent bonds on the board.  

                  4. Numbered Heads- KAGAN strategy -Student-Student    interaction about covalent bonding

                  5. 5 point assessment on covalent bonding.
