Leuzinger School Procedures
ATTENDANCE POLICY:
Daily Attendance
Dear Parents and Students,
Please be advised that California state law requires children under the age of eighteen to be enrolled and present at school everyday. Parents are legally mandated to ensure that their children are able and equipped to get to school on time each day of the school year (CA Ed. Code 48260). Additionally, public schools are funded by the state based on the average number or students present at school each day. As such, students are legally obligated to do all that is in their power to punctually arrive at and attend each class everyday of the school year (CA Ed. Code 48260). In cases where parents and/or students abandon these state mandated attendance requirements, both school officials and local law enforcement are empowered to progressively implement punitive measures to ensure that children are not denied their civil right to a free and fair public education. Some of these punitive measures employed at Leuzinger High School include, but are not limited to:
1) Leuzinger High School’s “NO GO” List: students with 10+ unexcused absences/tardies per quarter will not be permitted to participate in any extra curricular events until the completion of the following quarter
2) Students with 21 consecutive unexcused full-day absences will be dis-enrolled from Leuzinger High School
3) Students whom are tardy to class may be swept up at anytime by school safety and administration to remain in the guidance room for the duration of the period they were tardy
4) In House all day suspensions
5) Student Attendance Review Team meetings with school administrators and parents
6) Student Attendance Review Board meetings with school administrators, parents, and local law enforcement
7) Truancy citation of $350.00, issued to the student and/or the parent/guardian, by either Lawndale Sherriff’s Department or Hawthorne Police Department
In order to avoid any of the above punitive measures, please ensure that your children are present to each period, each and every school day. On occasion when a student has a legitimate verifiable reason to be absent (i.e. medical procedures, court proceedings, family tragedies, serious illness, etc.), parents/guardians should call the Attendance Office that day to inform the school. The phone numbers are (310) 263-2231 and (310) 263-2232. Without a parent/guardian phone call the day of the absence, students have 5 school days from their return to bring documentation of their absence to the attendance office (Room 111). Without a parent/guardian phone call or official documentation brought to the Attendance Office within 5 days, the absence will be recorded as an unexcused absence and/or truancy. Students’ presence in class is the first step towards inspiring meaningful learning, forging a positive school climate, and fostering rewarding relationships between students, families, and educators. Thank you for your efforts to be present at school everyday. ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES: Students returning from an absence must bring a note from home and get a re-admittance card from the attendance office between 7:00 and 7:55 a.m. Students who need to leave school early must bring a note to the attendance office by 7:45 a.m. All requests must be verified via a phone call to the parent before the pass is given. Students are not allowed to leave campus without permission. The cities of Hawthorne and Lawndale have passed ordinances to discourage truancy. Students found off campus between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. are subject to a truancy citation of $350. Truant students and their parents are subject to receive citations according to California Education Code. Teachers must provide make up assignments, for all legitimate absences, those absences that are documented by parent or doctors notes on file in the attendance Office. CELL PHONE POLICY (Pending School Board Approval): All cell phones and other electronic devices must be turned off and placed in a secure location (purse, backpack, etc.) during school hours, (7:54 am-2:48 pm) and specified school sponsored events. All students who bring cell phones to school must have a school agreement on file, signed by parents/guardians and the students. Leuzinger High School assumes no responsibility whatsoever for any equipment/property brought by a student to school that may be damaged or lost, or confiscated for non-compliance with the official school policy. BICYCLES: Bicycles must be parked at the bike racks between buildings two and three. Bikes must be locked. The school does not assume responsibility for lost or stolen bicycles. CAMPUS TOURS: Campus tours for interested parents and community members are conducted on Thursday mornings at 8:30. Parents who wish to participate should call the main office at 310-263-2200. COLLEGE CENTER: The Leuzinger College Center is open before school, during lunch, and after school to provide students with information about entrance requirements, applications, and financial aid. Students in their sophomore year should begin gathering information about colleges and sign up for the PSAT test. Juniors and seniors should continue gathering information and take the SAT and/or ACT tests. Students interested in a military career must take the ASVAB test. Students who wish to get a head start on college may take college-credit courses at El Camino Community College through the afternoon college program. COUNSELING OFFICE: Counselors are available to assist and advise students about career choices, course selections, college choices, and scholarship applications. As part of the counseling process, each student is asked to develop a four-year educational plan. Counselors are also responsible for assisting students with college and financial-aid applications. Students who wish to see a counselor must go to the counseling office before or after school and fill out a request form. The student will then be summoned to the counselor later during the day. Counselors are also available during lunch in the college and career center. ELIGIBILITY FOR EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: Students who participate in athletics or extracurricular performances must have a 2.00 grade point average on their most recent final or midterm report card. This policy has been implemented to insure that students make academic achievement their first priority. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES: In the event of a fire or earthquake, students will be evacuated to the football field. A reunion gate will be established at the Larch entrance to the football field. Parents must bring identification to retrieve students from school. A school lockdown will be implemented if there is a serious emergency for which it is necessary for students to stay inside classrooms. In the event of a lockdown, the campus will be closed and students will not be released to parents until the lockdown has ended. HEALTH OFFICE: Students who need to take medicine at school must have parent and doctors notes indicating the name of medicine, dosage, and time the medicine is to be taken. No aspirin or other over-the-counter medication can be administered to the student at school. The personnel in the office can administer only minor first aid. If the student requires medical attention or needs to go home, the parent/guardian will be notified. An up-to-date emergency card must be on file for every student. Students who wish to see the school nurse must obtain a written hall pass from their teacher. ID CARDS: ID pictures are taken during the first month of school. All students are provided with ID cards. A student who loses his or her ID card should go to the student store and arrange to have another made. There is a $5.00 charge for replacement. INSURANCE: Leuzinger High School and the Centinela Valley Union High School District do not assume financial responsibility for accidents or injuries to students. Members of athletic teams and participants in activities such as band, drill team, and pep squad must be covered by accident insurance. Students not already covered by private insurance policies may be eligible for Team-to-Win medical coverage through Centinela Hospital. Parents are required to assume full financial responsibility whenever medical care, ambulance, or hospital expenses occur. LIBRARY: The library is open before school, during lunch, and after school. Materials may be checked out for two weeks at a time. Renewals are permitted. Overdue fines are ten cents for each day. LOST AND FOUND: The lost and found is located in the counseling office. Students should get a pass from their teacher before going to the lost and found. MAKE-UP WORK: Parents should call the counseling office, 310-263-2220, so that home assignments can be arranged for any absence that may exceed three days. Students are responsible for making up all assignments missed because of illness. PARKING REGULATIONS: Students who drive to school must register in the security office and obtain a parking sticker. This requires a drivers license, registration, and proof of insurance. Students may park in the student parking lot only. The speed limit in the parking lot is ten miles per hour. PHYSICAL EDUCATION UNIFORMS: Students in physical education must wear the official Leuzinger P.E. uniform. Uniforms are available from P.E. teachers and the student store for $20.00. In addition to the official uniform, students must also wear tennis shoes, sweatsocks, and protective undergarments (bra, athletic supporter, jockey shorts). The school does not assume responsibility for money, valuables, books, notebooks, personal belongings, etc., left in gym lockers. Students should be sure to lock lockers to protect their personal belongings. Locks are available in the student store. READING SKILLS: Students who need assistance with reading are tested for placement in our Linguistics reading program. Please contact your child's counselor if you would like your child to be tested. REPORT CARDS: Report cards are mailed home every ten weeks. Passing grades are "A," "B," "C," and "D." A grade of "F" indicates failure and the loss of credit. Progress reports are mailed home after the fifth and fifteenth week of each semester. Please call the teacher as soon as possible whenever you have concerns about your child's grade. SPORTS PROGRAM: Leuzinger offers a full sports program. Football, cross country, and girls' volleyball are offered in the fall. Boys' basketball, girls' basketball, boys' soccer, and girls' soccer are played in the winter. Baseball, softball, boys' volleyball, and track are offered in the spring. A student who wishes to participate in athletics should talk with his or her P.E. teacher. STUDENT STORE: The student store is open from 7:30 to 7:55 a.m., during lunch, and from 2:45 to 3:15 p.m. Items sold include school supplies, P.E. clothes, locks, ASB cards, yearbooks, and tickets to games and dances. TELEPHONES: Pay telephones for student use are located in the lunch area. Students may use the phones before school, during lunch, and after school. Parents who need to reach students during school hours should call the attendance office. TEXTBOOKS: Students in English, foreign language, mathematics, science, and social studies are issued textbooks to keep at home. To eliminate the need for books to be carried back and forth to school, teachers keep textbooks in their classrooms for use by students during class time. The average textbook costs $60.00. Students are required to pay for any books that are lost or damaged. TUTORING: After-school tutoring is available Mondays through Thursdays. All subjects are covered, with an emphasis on mathematics and writing. VOCATIONAL EDUCATION: Vocational education opportunities are available through business education, home economics, and industrial arts classes. The Southern California Regional Occupation Center (SCROC) offers afternoon courses from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Mattel Toys and Northup-Grumman Aircraft offer unpaid, on-the-job training for seniors. Information about these programs can be obtained by contacting Ms. Christy Langer in the career center at 310-263-2264. WITHDRAWING FROM SCHOOL: A parent must accompany a student who has to withdraw from school to the registration/clearance office. If the pupil is moving out of the district, the request should contain the new address. All books must be turned in, and all charges paid at the time of clearance. Failure to return or pay for books will result in the withholding of official transcripts. |
